Friday 10 September

The residents of Dent must be either deaf or insomniacs. The church clock sounds not only on the hour throughout the night but also each quarter, with ever increasing number of bongs. The still warm night air carrying the sound very clearly to us in Ludwig . Fortunately we missed the cacophony that must have sounded at midnight but we were both aware of the early morning chimes.

A warm and humid day. We walk around the attractive cobbled streets of Dent and then head off on a 5 and a half hour walk into Deepdale. Up Flinter Gill  and around Great Combe along an old very uneven track running between stone walls. Then down along well marked paths until we get lost and end up deviating from the route in the book. Hot and weary we walk back into Dent and fancy a pint at the Sun Inn (“The best ale under the sun”). But it doesn’t open until 5 so we head back there after a shower to sample some different Yorkshire ale.

Cumberland sausage casserole for supper with ratatouille (tinned) and lentils (also tinned). Delicious. We plan a cycle trip for tomorrow along some double chevroned roads.
