Wednesday 1 September: to Nidderdale

An earlier crash on the M5 at Bridgwater adds an hour to our journey! Google Maps takes us on a detour allegedly to save 10 minutes: we will never know. The upside is that we can time our coffee stop at Gloucester Services and enjoy a delicious cup instead of the usual tasteless offering from Costa. We finally arrive at Oxen Close Farm at about 4.15. An idyllic setting in a rural valley. A certified site with the Camping and Caravan Club. We are the only ones here and have the spotless facilities and tranquil views all to ourselves. We stretch our legs and discover we are in Nidderdale, an AONB, which means it will be very beautiful but also that it is on neither of the maps of the Yorkshire Dales that I bought! We feel unsettled being off grid and can’t reliably use the internet as there is limited signal. Tomorrow we will need to go in search of a map. A simple supper of Chicken Casserole (M&S tin) washed down with some gutsy Valpollicella.
